Athens Runners

I have noticed lately that a number of "runners" from back in the days stumbles onto my blog...it it would be so nice if they would take the chance and contact me... it might not have know them but I would point them in the direction of some of their old friends (if I know them).

For me personally, there are a few I would like reconnect with...actually anyone who stumble upon this blog who lived/spent time in Athens in 1989/1991 I would love to hear from you.

Some folks are of course remembered more than others... but still it would be nice if you got in contact...

  3. Hi
Nice to hear from other runners, my girlfriend and me worked at athens-inn, diana-the huntress and at the campsite from ios in summer 1991, was one of the best summers in my live.
I remember i spent most of the time at victoria-station (at the greek fast-food restaurant) with an amstel in one hand and a sesame-ring in the other waiting for some backpackers, was happy there -i didnt liked the stressy trains.
    Nice greetings from vienna!

  4. Are there still runners in the Athens hostels? I was there hmmm...Maybe 1992 or so? Aphrodite. I'm so curious if there is still a runner culture. For a while I was in touch with Hannes from Holland, who I then lost touch with. I know he went back every summer back then. I have some good memories, but mainly very dark memories. There was a lot of abuse that went on at some of the hostels. At Aphrodite there were some jerks. One person got mean when he drank and would lock me out of the hostel late at night and tell me not to come back until I had brought backpackers with me (at 3 in the morning!) And the taxi drivers attacking us one night was very scary. I was just 18. Still, hanging out at Elefsina and Larissa, and even Corinthos, waiting for the train with all the runners, was always fun.

    1. Hi there, to my knowledge the "runners" died out in the mid-nineties. The golden years seem to have been 1987-1989, or maybe it was that that around the time I was there. The 1989 season was much more fun...due to the people who where there compared to the 1990 season.

I'm sorry that you had some dark moments...I cannot say I had any of those...I was lucky in our "boss" was a good guy...or at least to me. Still you are right there were some total jerks that worked in the hostels.

  5. Hello there,
I worked as a runner in Zorbas in summer 1989. I really enjoyed that time. Although I had contact to quite a few runners for a long time, I never got in touch with the most important friend of that time. He was from Georgia, USA. Just in case you read this: I really tried!

  7. Hi there, I was a runner for Larissiakon too. Fall '91, summer '92 and after returning from Israel in spring '93. The last year, it closed then. Met my husband there. Never returned to Athens. But still think of those days and miss it sometimes.
